Retail investors drives AMP Capital Corporate Bond Fund past A$1 billion mark

AMP Capital's Corporate Bond Fund has surpassed A$1 billion in funds under management four years after becoming available to retail investors.

AMP Capital's Corporate Bond Fund has surpassed A$1 billion in funds under management four years after becoming available to retail investors.

The fund aims to provide clients with a regular monthly income and total returns above government bonds as well as offering a diversified portfolio to help minimise risk.

AMP Capital Head of Retail and Corporate Business Craig Keary said: "We launched a retail version of the Corporate Bond Fund in 2009 in response to clients who wanted a lower risk way of investing in companies that provided them with yield. Since its establishment, the fund has resonated well with both advisers and customers and I'm thrilled to have reached this major milestone.

"We have also added the Corporate Bond Fund to our SMSF series, which was launched this year to meet the needs of the growing DIY super sector. SMSF investors like the fund in particular because of the stable income it provides and we are pleased with the number of trustees who have since invested in it."

AMP Capital's Jeff Brunton, who is Co-Portfolio Manager of the fund alongside David Carruthers, underscored the importance of the fund delivering on its income focus. "We understand that our clients don't want to beat a benchmark," he said. "Their goal is to receive a regular income so that is our focus."

The AMP Capital Corporate Bond Fund is 'true to label', which means its priorities are to preserve capital and protect an investor's wealth while delivering monthly income. The fund invests mostly in investment- grade companies, with only 10 per cent permitted in high yield, across a range of industries.

Mr Keary noted the fund is one of AMP Capital's flagship retail products. "More investors are starting to understand the benefits of having bonds in their portfolio especially given the low rate of return offered by term deposits. Our 15-year corporate bond strategy has been tried and tested through market cycles and has continued to perform strongly," he said.

"AMP Capital has more than 40 years' experience in fixed income and a large, global investment team, which gives clients the confidence their investment goals will be met when they invest in corporate bonds with us."
